The specialisation offers 3 course choices:
- Functional materials,
- Durability,
- Materials in conditions of use (courses in Romania).

The Master MECTS is co-certified by engineering schools (INPT-ENSIACET, ENIT) and by UPS. It mainly aims at preparing the graduates to complete a PhD thesis or to study in, industry. 

During the M2, the students acquire or broaden the essential knowledge for the creation (synthesis, elaboration, shaping) of new families of materials, nanomaterials or multimaterials, for specific structures or functions, the structural characterisation, the control of micro-structures, the measure and control of their mechanical and physical properties during the fabrication process or during the use of the parts and systems made (durability of structures and systems, evolution of use properties).

The objective is to train graduates able to adapt  to different interdisciplinary courses in the field of materials. Yet it avoids specialising the students too much to prevent closing them the access to the numerous activity sectors concerned.

  • Admissions only based on application file.
  • For the students in double curriculum (engineering school/M2R) registrations are done in their school. The application has to be submitted during the registration in 3rd year of the engineering curriculum.
  • For candidates in M1
    Recruitment to the Master 1 Materials Science and Engineering occurs on review of applications. The recommended Licenses for admission are chemistry license and the license of physics-chemistry (or equivalent in France or abroad).
  • For candidates in M2 MECTS
    For external submissions for the mention M1, training in the field of materials (in France or abroad) is strongly recommended. File a claim directly on the website of the University Paul Sabatier. The site opens in general around mid-March, responses are provided in June or early July.

Scientific and technical skills

Some aspects are more or less covered within depth according to the curriculum chosen by the student:

  • creating new materials: metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites (CMO, CMM, CMC) or nanocomposites,
  • implementing new methods of materials' fabrication or improve the existing methods,
  • improving the use properties of existing materials by a close control of their microstructure,
  • knowing how to change the method or the fabrication parameters to achieve your goals,
  • studying the behaviour of materials in use (fatigue, durability, corrosion, abrasion, ...)
  • mastering the techniques to analyse materials, to study their structure and micro-structure, to measure their mechanical and functional properties.

The following of S9 is specific of each establishment (UPS, INPT-ENSIACET, INPT-ENIT) and corresponds to one course at choice constituted of one academic unit (6 ECTS).

The semester 10 is a 5-month internship in a research laboratory which can take place in an academic or institutional research laboratory or in an industrial group (30 ECTS) and includes bibliographic search and experimental work, the writing of a dissertation and a presentation to a jury. It takes place during the second semester.

The graduates of M2 MECTS continue their studies in PhD in Toulouse or in another city or work in the industry.

For the most part, the graduates of M2R MECTS continue their studies in PhD in Toulouse or in another city. The others are engineers who start working in the industry.

In Toulouse, supporting laboratories in the framework of the Ecole Doctorale Sciences de la Matière,and sometimes of the Ecole Doctorale Interdisciplinaire Aéronautique et Astronautique, offer around 25-30 "Materials" scholarships per year: Grants from the Ministry, ANR, industrial contracts, CIFRE convention or agreements with big organisations (CEA, ADEME, DGA, CNES, ...).

Therefore there are lots of possibilities both in pure research and in targeted research.

Professional prospects


  • Engineer or Project Director in a big corporate group or in a SME in the following sectors:
    • Materials' Design : designing, creating and shaping manufactured products (metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, nanomaterials, multimaterials),
    • Research and development / Design office / Characterisation and control of materials, providing expertise in the field of materials (during the fabrication process and during the life cycle of the parts and systems),
    • Chemical, structural, microstructural, mechanical and physical Analysis and Control departments.
  • After a PhD: researcher, research faculty member (in higher education or research organisation).
